A ruler grants a man a pardon. The man saves a woman. The merchant thanks the man for saving his daughter. The man falls in love with the woman. The ruler asks the merchant an important question. The merchant responds wisely. The man uncovers a secret. So does the merchant. Someone gains a friend. Some even gain a family. A simple story! Were it not for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, which separate the protagonists from one another: Here, negotiations take place and the struggle for truth ensues, for every decision means all or nothing.
Lessing’s Enlightenment drama doesn’t ask, “What’s your stance on religion?” but rather, “What’s your stance as a human being?” A plea for tolerance and humanity.
