After a one-year break, the NEXT LEVEL - Festival for Games, Interactive Art and Digital Theater returns in a new form and will take place from 14-17 November 2024 at five selected venues in Dortmund.
The festival will focus on digital games culture and the use of new technologies in art, combining performances, interactive installations and a rich supporting program. With the kind support of the festival founder NRW KULTURsekretariat, the City of Dortmund and the Ministry of Culture and Science with the New Arts Ruhr program.
The city of Dortmund was able to recruit media artist Lex Rütten, who works at the Dortmund Künstlerhaus, as curator for the content and implementation of the festival. He gained experience as a digital dramaturge at the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen. Viviane Lennert completes the team as production manager. She worked as a curator and project manager at the NEW NOW Festival of the Zollverein Foundation, co-founded the arc gallery at tresor.west and works as a media artist in changing constellations across the region.
In addition to the Dortmunder U, which acts as the organizer and main venue and hosts a varied program of games, exhibitions, performances, workshops, talks and film screenings, the Dortmunder Hafen with the Akademie für Theater und Digitalität and the Projektspeicher forms a second festival focus location that makes the creative potential of new technologies tangible at a low threshold. Like a digital octopus, further activities and collaborations will extend across parts of the (northern) city center and connect the offerings of the focus locations, such as the BaseStack and the BIG Gallery, both in terms of content and space.
