On Water. WasserWissen in Berlin

Water is life, but it can also be destructive. Starting October 10, 2025, the exhibition “On Water. WasserWissen” at the Humboldt Labor in Berlin will showcase current research projects on the topic of water conducted by the Berlin University Alliance (BUA). These projects are complemented by artistic works that explore the element of water and vividly convey its versatility.
Water is omnipresent—we drink it, bathe in it, and experience it as rain, ice, or a river. And yet it remains contradictory: familiar and unpredictable at the same time. Sometimes there is too much of it, sometimes too little. Sometimes it flows, sometimes it is scarce, and sometimes it floods entire regions. In the wake of climate change, growing cities, and global inequality, water is becoming a challenge. It cannot simply be controlled and calls into question established ways of dealing with it. Water is not a passive object, but a dynamic element that requires new scientific perspectives and social negotiations.
The exhibition *On Water. WasserWissen in Berlin showcases research projects from the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) that explore water from a wide variety of perspectives. They all seek to learn from its properties—such as its cycles, its adaptability, and its power to connect—in order to find solutions for the future. The audio track “BUA Calling” offers deeper insights into the interplay between humans and water: In it, scientists explain why it’s worth listening to water—it knows more than we think.
Background
The present is characterized by too much or too little water: cycles and systems that were long taken for granted have been disrupted, thrown off balance, and rendered vulnerable. The disruption of the aquatic balance also poses a challenge to science. The exhibition *On Water* demonstrates that no single scientific discipline alone would be capable of grasping the complexity of the interconnections involved. Often, it is only the interplay of the most diverse forms of knowledge that leads to understanding and new solutions. This includes learning from one another across the various, mostly highly specialized scientific disciplines, as well as exchange and dialogue with people who live within specific traditions and experiences and bring their own unique knowledge to the table. One of the great challenges of the future is to establish forms of dialogue and cooperation that allow people to engage with one another as equals.
