Cultivating mushrooms at home
Live online course with starter set for beginners
The independent cultivation of edible mushrooms provides direct access to an extraordinary organism and at the same time opens up a sustainable form of food production. Anyone who learns to propagate mycelium and prepare substrates themselves can grow mushrooms independently in the long term - whether in the cellar, on the balcony, in the garden or in living spaces. Compared to prefabricated cultivation boxes, this method not only offers greater flexibility, but also significant cost advantages.
This two-hour live online course provides the basic knowledge for successful mushroom cultivation in a private environment. It is specifically aimed at people with no previous experience or only basic knowledge. The aim is to create a solid understanding of the biological relationships and at the same time to learn a practical method that can be continued independently.
Before the course begins, participants receive a comprehensive starter pack by post. This contains all the necessary materials to put the course content into practice immediately - including various forms of mycelium, prepared seed spawn, initial substrate and an illustrated manual. The first harvest of oyster mushrooms is possible just a few weeks after the course.
The theoretical part teaches the biological basics of fungi as an independent group of organisms. Topics covered include sterile working methods, substrate structure, fungal nutrition strategies and environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and light. In addition, typical contaminations are discussed and it is explained how problematic moulds can be identified at an early stage. Sustainable alternatives to commercial cultivation systems are also presented, as well as other cultivation options, such as on wood or in containers.
In the practical section, the course instructor, a biotechnologist specializing in mycology, will demonstrate a proven cultivation method step by step. The inoculation of sterile grain spawn, the further propagation of mycelium and the transfer to a new substrate will be demonstrated. Participants learn to correctly assess growth stages and decide when a substrate is fully grown or in need of renewal.
Two months after the course, there is an optional, free online follow-up appointment. Here, individual results are discussed, yields are evaluated and specific tips are given on how to optimize your own cultivation conditions. In addition, all participants receive access to a learning platform with the course recording and further materials that are permanently available.
