In an argument with his wife Burcu, Oray pronounces the Muslim divorce formula "talaq". The local imam in Hagen explains to him that this must result in a three-month separation. While Burcu has no understanding of such religious rules, Oray feels committed to his faith. He agrees to the temporary separation, moves to Cologne and wants to leave his petty criminal career behind him with a fresh start. Hefinds a job, an apartment and a connection to a conservative community. He earns respect in the closed male world and yet is torn between his love for his wife, the strict rules of the community and his own values.

"Oray is one of those films that is needed more than ever in times of populist black-and-white painting: a sober, almost documentary-like film that brings a differentiated view to a heated discourse... a social-realistic cinema of nuances, far removed from loud culture clash and problem-film style." (Jens Balkenborg, epd Film 5/2019).

The film was awarded Best First Feature at the Berlinale 2018, Zejhun Demirov (Oray) received the First Steps Award for Best Newcomer Actor.
