In the organizer's words:
Bored by her passionless marriage to the insipid musician Orpheus, Eurydice prefers to amuse herself with Pluto, the lord of the underworld, and - quite unlike in the mythological model - allows herself to be carried off enthusiastically into the realm of the dead. In the first great work by the "father of modern operetta," rousing Parisian dance music meets orchestral sensitivity, culminating in the world-famous cancan. Offenbach's travesty of myths is carried by a top-class ensemble that, led by speaker Max Hopp, dives into a brightly colored underworld.
