Oskar Hentschel Quartett – Jazz/Improvised Music

On June 23, 2026, saxophonist Oskar Hentschel will play his bachelor's degree concert at Horns Erben in Leipzig. After studying jazz at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Academy of Music and Theater, this evening marks the official conclusion of his studies. The concert will take place in Arndtstraße, a venue that has long played a central role in Leipzig's jazz scene.

The quartet consists of musicians with whom Hentschel has already played together over a longer period of time during his studies. Together with Gabriel Gutierrez on piano, Simon Kuban on bass and Henri Reichmann on drums, the band focuses on a modern quartet sound. The program consists of original compositions by the band members as well as pieces that have been important to Hentschel in recent years. An integral part of the evening is John Coltrane's "Resolution". As Hentschel has a great admiration for Coltrane's music and has regularly played at the jazz sessions at Horns Erben over the years, it is a logical consequence for him to bring these influences together at his final concert.

He completed his studies mainly with Prof. Johannes Enders. He received further inspiration from lessons with Prof. Eric Schaefer, Prof. Michael Wollny and Max Stadtfeld. These different perspectives on saxophone playing and improvisation have shaped his way of working in recent years and now flow into the music of his quartet.

The concert offers a direct insight into the musical development of the band and marks the end of Hentschel's time at the HMT Leipzig.
