"OSTBLOCK RIOT GRRRLZ"
Women in the subculture of real socialism
The fact that subversive art and subculture behind the Iron Curtain was also male-dominated is not a surprising finding. This makes it all the more important to focus retrospectively on opposing phenomena and thus on the corresponding female artists or groups.
The author, editor and curator ALEXANDER PEHLEMANN, whose fanzine ZONIC (Almanach für: Kulturelle Randstandsblicke & Involvierungsmomente) was the starting point for various projects and publications on the subculture of the GDR and the Eastern Bloc, undertakes an art and noise short-circuiting tour through the female soundscapes of the East, garnished with images, films and sounds.
Based not least on the publications he co-edited, "Magnetizdat DDR. Magnetic Tape Underground East 1979-1990" (2023, book: Verbrecher Verlag, as LP: Edition Iron Curtain Radio), where Erweiterter OrGasmus was also portrayed as a musical faction of the Erfurt women artists' group, and "Unearthing The Music" (Spector Books), which presents various female punk artists from the Eastern Bloc and non-aligned Yugoslavia, among others, and will be published in the fall.
