OSTEN Festival

Noch niemand hat sich das Event gemerkt.

In the organizer's words:

From September 12 to 27, the OSTEN Festival, under the title KRAFTWERK – ZUKUNFT, invites visitors to explore and celebrate Bitterfeld-Wolfen and “the East” as a landscape of change for people, nature, and community life. OSTEN is a festival for art and mutual interest.

This year’s edition of the festival centers on the energy of the future. Where will our energy come from in the future? But also: Where do we draw strength and courage from in times of crisis? At two locations—the historic Zschornewitz power plant and the area around the former Jugendclub 84 in Wolfen-Nord—we’ll generate energy together, recharge our strength, and send out impulses into our broad network of energy for the future. Here, artists will present theater and music pieces, performances, films, and much more. Workshops and discussions will offer a fresh perspective on the present and the future and provide an opportunity to engage in conversation with one another.

OSTEN is a festival for art and mutual interest. It explores and celebrates “the East” as a landscape of change for people, nature, and community life. And where, if not in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, can stories of change be told? For like almost no other city, Bitterfeld—once dubbed “the dirtiest city in Europe”—now stands as a model for ecological revitalization and transformation. And yet it is a prime example of the economic, social, and personal upheavals that many places in eastern Germany and beyond have experienced.

Through art, the OSTEN Festival aims to stimulate dialogue about the history and present of “the East” and to foster encounters: art as an opportunity to discover, take action, connect, and stay connected. The festival sees itself as a highlighter and amplifier of the dynamic energy of a region in transition and aims to build something where much of the cultural offerings have disappeared since reunification. OSTEN is aimed at the people of Bitterfeld-Wolfen, by developing unconventional ways to experience the city, and at people from outside the region, who are invited to discover the unique character of this landscape and its history.
