Palle Mikkelborg / Jakob Bro / Marilyn Mazur present "Strands"

"When we walked out on stage it felt like a homecoming", is how guitarist Jakob Bro described "Strands", the expansive and emotionally charged live recording from Copenhagen, in which three formative protagonists of jazz in Denmark from three generations come together. The moving concert in February 2023 resulted in an album that was released on the ECM label in November 2023. The repertoire, mainly penned by Jakob Bro, is treated in a spontaneous and exploratory manner. The material is gently transformed and reinterpreted, while Marilyn's Mazur's subtle percussion artistry with flourishing gongs, bowed metals and deep drums merges with Bro's roaming and meandering waves of sound and Mikkelborg's unique trumpet tone. "A little hour in the company of Mikkelborg, Mazur and Bro and the world had changed. Familiar frameworks had shifted through obvious moments of beauty and lingering calm." Ivan Rod for the Nordic music magazine "GAFFA" Jakob Bro and Palle Mikkelborg, long-time friends, had long discussed the possibilities of working together in different styles. They started playing together regularly a decade ago. Marilyn Mazur joined them in 2020. Bro said of the resulting music: "There is air in the music, great freedom and a shared desire to create something that cannot necessarily be explained, but felt."

"It's a search for meaning. Is there a meaning and if there is, can I be a part of it? And sometimes I'm reminded that there is." Palle Mikkelborg on his lifelong work as an improviser in Jørgen Leth and Andreas Koefed's new Jakob Bro documentary "Music for Black Pigeons", which will be shown in the JazzHall on the evening before the concert. Marilyn Mazur (born 1955) and Palle Mikkelborg (born 1941) have a considerable musical history in common. Marilyn's contribution to Palle's large-scale composition "Aura", which was dedicated to Miles Davis and performed with him, led to Mazur playing in Miles' band in the mid-1980s. Jan Garbarek once compared Mazur's playing to the movement of the wind through trees. Jakob Bro (born 1978) was first heard on ECM in the bands of Paul Motian and Tomasz Stanko on "Garden of Eden" and "Dark Eyes". His albums as a bandleader have brought together improvisers of diverse backgrounds and experience. The scope of the music continues to expand, as seen on recent releases such as "Uma Elmo", a collection of lucid watercolors he created with Arve Henriksen and Jorge Rossy, and the more extroverted "Once Around The Room", on which Bro and saxophonist Joe Lovano pay tribute to Paul Motian.
