Turning literature into comics
May, which makes everything new, brings a fresh date to the Graphic Novel Days. Otherwise, the familiar format remains the same: Curator Andreas Platthaus welcomes one guest from Germany and one from abroad.
In 1994, literature experienced a revolution: Paul Auster's novel "City of Glass" was published as a comic, drawn by David Mazzucchelli and designed by Paul Karasik. Today, there are numerous graphic novel adaptations, i.e. literal "graphic novels", but the big bang still reverberates. Especially as Karasik followed up last year: In order to put Auster's "New York Trilogy" (Reprodukt; translation: Joachim A. Frank), the first part of which was "City of Glass", completely into pictures, he engaged the Italian old master Lorenzo Mattotti for part two and finally drew part three himself. The result: 400 comic pages with three handwriting styles, but all designed by Karasik.
On stage with the American illustrator is Katia Fouquet from Berlin, who is adapting a similarly complex literary model with the story "Jonas or the Artist at Work" by Albert Camus. Her current project is even more ambitious: she is drawing the comic "Der Radierer" (Avant) about her grandfather, a graphic artist who was a judge during the Nazi era.
