PAUL MPAGI SEPUYA
IN THE GAZE OF DESIRE
July 1 through October 4, 2026
With “Paul Mpagi Sepuya. In the Gaze of Desire,” the Sprengel Museum Hannover will present the first major solo museum exhibition in Germany by the American photographer Paul Mpagi Sepuya (b. 1982, San Bernardino, California) from July 1 through October 4, 2026. The exhibition offers a comprehensive insight into a body of work that fundamentally questions and expands the photographic portrait. Featuring more than 90 works spanning roughly two decades, the exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of the development of Sepuya’s artistic practice.
Sepuya is one of the defining figures in contemporary photography. His works navigate the boundaries between portraiture, staging, and reflection on the photographic medium. From a Black and queer perspective, he examines the conditions of photographic visibility and the relationship between the photographer, the subject, and the viewer.
Developed in collaboration with the Fotomuseum Winterthur, the exhibition brings together early and recent bodies of work as well as materials from the artist’s personal archive.
