Periphery on tour in Germany in January 2024

Rome wasn't built in a day, the world has never been as unpredictable as it is today, "Djent" is not a genre and every new album is an adventure. Undeniable truths in 2023, for Periphery the development of the new record was one of the most difficult experiences, a process that almost broke the band. But with "Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre," the guys return with music that shows the band at its peak. "There were times when I didn't know how this album would ever come out. I didn't know if I would ever be comfortable with the album, and I would rather leave the band than put out an album that I wasn't comfortable with," confesses guitarist Misha Mansoor. The progressive metal quintet worked on the production for two and a half years, struggling with logistical problems due to the pandemic as much as with their own demands. For a lot of time had passed between sessions due to Covid rules, during which each member could almost overanalyze the material. At the same time, he says, everyone agreed that Periphery should not repeat itself: "I always say that it's very easy to make a Periphery album: It has to excite us," Mansoor describes, "At this point, there's no other reason than to make music we're proud of, and the stakes are higher because we've all grown as writers and players. Material that we would have considered great in the past is no longer timely." But "Periphery V" is proof: the strongest steel is forged in the hottest fires. Thus was born an album in which every sonic weapon in the group's vast arsenal is expanded and seemingly mastered. The melodies, which dip in and out of the band's polyrhythmic maelstrom, have sharper hooks, and the album's production, sound and atmosphere are more textured and compelling than ever before. There are wild, creative twists and turns that are a testament to a band boldly navigating the outer edges of their sound while thoughtfully evolving beyond the expected. And yet, the record forms a cohesive, dense structure and is - as to be expected from three excellent string gods - a really thick guitar board. Now Periphery can hardly wait to present their new material live.
