Piramo e Tisbe mit der Akamus Berlin

In the organizer's words:

The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin is a guest at St. Elisabeth Church with an exceptional work and a fantastic cast of singers: "Piramo e Tisbe", an intermezzo tragico by Johann Adolph Hasse.

When Johann Adolph Hasse wrote "Piramo e Tisbe" in 1768, he was probably the most frequently performed opera composer of the late Baroque period. With the emotionally gripping 'Intermezzo tragico', he musically entered a new opera era. The literary material on which the work is based has Shakespearean qualities: the family feud between two young, unhappy lovers is reminiscent of 'Romeo and Juliet' and indeed the drama about Piramo and Tisbe's forbidden love is known today primarily as a parody of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

Hasse set the tragic events to music in a groundbreaking, colorful and expressive way. By leaving behind long frozen operatic conventions, his music gained a compelling dramatic flow that became groundbreaking for Viennese classical music.
