Book presentation and discussion
Almost every description of our society cannot avoid addressing the - supposedly growing - polarization at some point. However, the debate about polarization is characterized by a contradiction: While more and more people fear a split in society, surveys show that citizens' attitudes are not necessarily drifting further and further apart.
On the other hand, it will never be possible to overcome a certain diversity of opinions. On the contrary: according to sociologist Nils Kumkar, different views in a society are essential for the functioning of political systems. The questions we should be asking ourselves instead are: How can we divide more productively as a society? Which polarization can be used politically in which situations? How does right-wing populism in particular benefit from this - and (how) can this be prevented?
With: Nils Kumkar (sociologist)
