Possessed is an American death metal band that was originally formed in 1983. Known for their fast playing style and Jeff Becerra's growl vocals, they are often considered the first band of the death metal genre and, along with Metallica, Exodus, Testament and Death Angel, paved the way for the Bay Area thrash metal scene in the 1980s. The band is also notable because future Primus member Larry LaLonde was Possessed's lead guitarist from 1984 to 1987.

After disbanding in 1987 and re-forming from 1990 to 1993, the band re-formed in 2007 with original bassist and vocalist Jeff Becerra. Since their formation, Possessed have released three studio albums: "Seven Churches", "Beyond the Gates" and "Revelations of Oblivion" as well as one live album, two compilation albums and two EPs.
