Prater Picknick
In the organizer's words:
Summer doesn’t begin at the Konzerthaus—it begins on a meadow, with a picnic basket and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra performing under the open sky.
The Kaiserwiese in the Prater is the perfect setting for what the Vienna Symphony Orchestra does every summer: music not as an obligatory experience, but as a celebration. No tuxedo requirements, no stiff rows of seats—just the orchestra, the open air, and the chance to listen to the finale of Tchaikovsky’s symphony bathed in the light of the Giant Ferris Wheel.
The program blends familiar works (Bernstein, Donizetti, Strauss) with surprises—new adaptations by the artist Teya, music from films, musicals, and opera arias. Holly Hyun Choe conducts, with Rolando Villazón and Ilia Staple singing. It’s a colorful concert to kick off the summer, just as it should be: lighthearted, fun, and full of joie de vivre.
Pack your picnic basket, bring a friend, and enjoy what Vienna really needs in the summer: great music outdoors.
