Premiere: Sofias Reisen mit dem Ensemble WAKS

In the organizer's words:

Premiere: Sofia's travels with the WAKS ensemble

Original Yiddish voices from a bygone world with the WAKS ensemble.

The Soviet-Jewish ethnomusicologist SOFIA MAGID (1892-1954) set off on a journey to the people in the shtetls of Ukraine with a wax cylinder phonograph in her luggage. There she collected and archived the voices of Yiddish singers to save Yiddish culture. "Sofias reisen" combines original recordings from the 1930s with modern arrangements, video projections and texts from a fictitious travel diary - and brings the project started by Sofia into our time.

Inge Mandos - vocals, moderation, Hans-Christian Jaenicke - violin, Klemens Kaatz - piano, acc., voices from wax cylinder phono-graphs.

Sponsored by the Mara and Holger Cassens Foundation.
