Vermiglio, a mountain village in the Italian Alps. In the winter of 1944, the war is both far away and omnipresent. Attilio has returned home, a deserter, carried over the mountains on the shoulders of his Sicilian comrade Pietro. Their arrival brings unrest to life in the village, which follows the eternal rhythm of the seasons. In the house of teacher Cesare and his large family, the great whispering begins: Lucia, the eldest daughter, has fallen in love with Pietro, who is hiding on the outskirts of the village waiting for the end of the war. Her sisters Ada and Flavia, with whom Lucia shares a room, are also full of dreams. Will their strict father let them go to school in the city? What secrets does Cesare lock himself in his study room with when he listens to the carefully guarded records with the music of Chopin and Vivaldi? As the seasons progress and the world slowly recovers from the tragedy of war, the sisters seek their own paths in life under the watchful eye of their mother Adele. They must be new paths.
