The popular talk series from the Central Library is doing a special edition at "Queer Art meets Britney X". On May 16, host Sascha Förster (Theatermuseum Düsseldorf) will talk to his guests about queer youth love.
First love is a formative experience - especially for queer young people, who are often navigating between self-discovery, social expectations and the desire for acceptance. Queer people often initially conform to heterosexual expectations - not out of their own desire, but because they don't seem to know any other option. Most queer people experience their first queer love late, sometimes even as adults. This leads to missed adolescent experiences.
To change this, we need more visibility, open conversations and safe spaces in which queer young people can experience their love freely and without fear. And queer role models are needed - in the media, in literature and on stage. In the panel discussion, Sascha Förster talks to his guests about the first intense feelings, discovering one's own identity and the challenges that queer young people often experience in the process.
