QUEERHISTORYMONTH

QueerHistoryMonth will take place in Hamburg from May 1 to 31, 2026(www.queerhistoryhamburg.de). Various events as part of the festival will bring the history(ies) of the queer community in Hamburg to life. Everyone is welcome - kings, queers, queens, allies, friends, families (of choice) and everyone in between and beyond!

The event

The documentary accompanies drag queen Nuka through Greenland's north - a moving road movie about dreams, friendship and self-determination in the Arctic summer. On May 18, historian Eva Decker will give a queer-historical introduction to the film and trace the development from so-called female impersonators in Hamburg in the 1950s to today's drag culture.

The documentary portrays Nuka Bisgaard, a young drag queen from Nuuk who dreams of being the first drag queen north of the Arctic Circle to go on tour. Together with her best friend Lu, a DJ and electronic musician, the journey takes them through the Arctic summer to small, remote settlements to bring a breath of fresh air to the often sleepy small-town atmosphere. When life takes an unexpected turn, the tour and the dreams begin to falter ... With this documentary, Lene Stæhr unfolds a humorous and touching road movie about dreams, courage and the struggle for a self-determined life. We are showing the film twice, each time with a queer supporting film:

Two Black Boys in Paradise (GB 2025, Baz Sells, 9 min., OmU): Edan and Dulas live their love openly and find self-acceptance without shame as two black boys - supporting film on 13.05.

Flores del otro Patio (CH/CO 2022, Jorge Cadena, 15 min., OVR): In northern Colombia, queer activists use performative actions to denounce the exploitation of the largest coal mine. - Supporting film on 18.05.

On May 18, historian Eva Decker will give a queer-historical introduction to the film. She sheds light on the history of female impersonators in Hamburg in the 1950s and traces the arc from the female impersonators of that time to today's drag performances.
