QueerHistoryMonth | Holy Homophobia!? | Performance

In the organizer's words:

QUEERHISTORYMONTH

QueerHistoryMonth will take place in Hamburg from May 1 to 31, 2026(www.queerhistoryhamburg.de). Various events as part of the festival will bring the history(ies) of the queer community in Hamburg to life. Everyone is welcome - kings, queers, queens, allies, friends, families (of choice) and everyone in between and beyond!

The event

A group of young performers combine personal stories with political issues: queer identity, church and colonialism are at the center of this impressive performance about imported queerphobia, empowerment and global perspectives - brought to the stage in a powerful, polyphonic and moving way.

Young people between the ages of 16 and 25 bring a powerful, artistic performance to the stage, which was created under the direction of the einhornkollektiv. Using their own texts, choreographic elements and spoken word formats, they deal with queer identity, faith and missionary history - personally, politically and forcefully.

A particular focus is on so-called imported queerphobia in African countries. The performance sheds light on how colonial influences and Christian churches have contributed to the emergence of anti-queer legislation. The performers interweave their own experiences with voices from the global South and create a multi-layered artistic dialog.

The piece was created in 2025 as part of the PHŒNiX Festival Koloniale Interferenzen and is the result of months of workshops on movement, creative writing and queer empowerment. It is a space for expression, self-empowerment and socio-political reflection.

The moving production will now be shown again on one date. The project offers the young artists a stage to make their perspectives visible and invites the audience to listen, think and exchange ideas.

The production was developed in creative collaboration with Sarah Ahrens and Frances Heller and supported by the Hamburgische Kulturstiftung, the Schachtsiek Familien Stiftung and Hamburg Pride e.V.

The event is accompanied by the exhibition This is me! - Queer and religious?

"How can you be religious and gay?" - "Your religion oppresses queer people! Why are you still a member?" Queer religious people hear sentences like these all the time. From both sides. They often feel that they have to make a choice: either their faith or their identity. As if the two were incompatible.

But they do exist: people who live both. Who pray and love. Who are trans* and read the Torah. Who are welcome as a lesbian couple in the mosque. Who live their faith not despite, but with their queer identity.

The exhibition is open to the public from May 5 to July 5, 2026 - as part of the events and on Saturdays from 12 to 2 p.m.
