Katharina Franck comes from Düsseldorf - who would have known? Now the singer and guitarist is returning to the stage with her Rainbirds, choosing the city of her birth and her favorite record festival. Rainbirds, meanwhile, are a Berlin band and were part of the bubbling music scene in the former Wall City in the 1980s.
They won the Berlin Senate Rock Competition, which opened the door to a record deal, landing them a contract with major label Mercury. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1987 and contained the smash hit "Blueprint", the signature song that has shaped the group's image and sound to this day. But Rainbirds are an album band. Both their first album "Rainbirds" and "Call Me Easy, Say I'm Strong, Love Me My Way, It Ain't Wrong" are self-contained works, both in terms of composition and sound. It is no coincidence that Rainbirds named themselves after a song from Tom Waits' experimental record Swordfishtrombones. Rainbirds make pop music, but with the aim of creating art and by no means merely serving the radio format. This applies even more to "Call Me Easy, Say I'm Strong, Love Me My Way, It Ain't Wrong" than to their debut - this is already Rainbirds for advanced listeners. The fact that the ten-minute song "Sea Of Time" is the album's central track and also the most popular with fans speaks for itself. With the Rainbirds and Katharina Franck, you can hear the artpop approach of Kate Bush, and acts such as Roxy Music or Talk Talk may also have been sources of inspiration. The artistic approach is underlined by the fact that Depeche Mode & U2 photographer Anton Corbijn was responsible for the cover art for "Call Me Easy, Say I'm Strong, Love Me My Way, It Ain't Wrong" and shot two videos for songs from the album.
For the Lieblingsplatte concert, Rainbirds are coming together in a unique line-up: founding members Michael Beckmann and Wolfgang Glum will be joining Katharina Franck. But also Die Ärzte bassist Rod González, who flew to Montreal with the Rainbirds shortly after the completion of the first album so that the trio could come together as a live band far below the radar of the local media. Finally, the pianist and composer Ulrike Haage joined the Rainbirds for the release of "Call Me Easy..." at the beginning of 1989 and accompanied them on their second major tour. She remained the Rainbirds' co-writer and keyboardist until 1999.
In a first set, "Call Me Easy, Say I'm Strong, Love Me My Way, It Ain't Wrong" is performed in the original song sequence, before several classics from the Rainbirds' debut are added as encores. And their biggest hit will not be missing on the favorite record evening.
