In the organizer's words:

Raum als Ort
- Varieties of spatial realities

April 6 - May 19, 2024
Opening: Friday, April 5, 7 p.m.

Art needs space and transforms spaces into places. In "Space as Place", the Künstlerhaus is showing works that tangibly address their actual spatial quality, i.e. consciously "locate" themselves. They transform the ordinary surrounding space into a special place. The spatial can be experienced as expanded or condensed, as relaxed or tense, as open or closed.

In "Raum als Ort", the exhibition visitors themselves become the resonating space of the art. They can experience how art takes over the rooms of the Künstlerhaus; rooms of a building that once served as a coal mine washhouse and helped miners to conquer the underground space. In view of the building's 100th anniversary, it is clear that spaces remain spaces, while places are constantly changing - also with the help of art.

"Space as Place" is the second of three anniversary exhibitions celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Künstlerhaus Dortmund. The building was constructed in 1924 as a washhouse for Schacht Westfalia and was last used by the University of Applied Sciences for Design. Students from this school occupied the building and fought for the space, which has now been a place for art for 41 years.
