Räume des Übergangs

In 2022 and 2023, Julia Gaisbacher visited Hanne Darboven's studio buildings, took hundreds of photographs and made a film about the ensemble of buildings in Rönneburg, Hamburg-Harburg.

On this evening, the Lenbachhaus presents the photo book "Hanne Darboven. Am Burgberg". Published by Hatje Cantz and edited by Dietmar Rübel, the volume concludes Julia Gaisbacher's multi-year exploration of Hanne Darboven's artist's house and at the same time continues her own work on "dream houses". The photographs provide sensitive insights into the conceptual artist's studios in the south of Hamburg. The five houses served as a place to live and work for 40 years. In addition, the unique ensemble of buildings still functions as a treasure house for thousands of objects and works of art. The precisely composed black-and-white photographs of the rooms, whose seemingly chaotic abundance is diametrically opposed to the strict order of Darboven's works on paper, create an artistic dialog between the generations across time and space.

Biographies

Hanne Darboven (1941-2009) is one of the outstanding international artists of the 20th century. The multiple documenta participant founded conceptual art in the 1960s together with artist friends; her central contribution is that she developed her own methods for depicting periods of time - days, months, years or even a century. In doing so, Hanne Darboven acted as an attentive observer of her time and of the history and development of politics, culture and society.

Julia Gaisbacher (*1983) lives and works in Vienna. She studied art history at the University of Graz and then sculpture at the Dresden University of Fine Arts and the Sint-Lukas School of Arts in Brussels. Her working method focuses on artistic research, an approach that focuses on architecture and the urban landscape as human living environments. Julia Gaisbacher has received numerous international awards for her photo books.
