Reality Bites: Ladies Only

In the organizer's words:

What do movies have to do with our lives? How do movies depict reality? And how do they shape our view of the world? At REALITY BITES , young film enthusiasts present their own selection of films and invite the filmmakers and the audience to discuss them. In July, REALITY BITES will host three events at Filmhaus Köln, selected and moderated by students from the University of Cologne.

The last event in the series will be shown on July 9 at 20:00 at the Filmhaus.

A small film crew enters the women-only compartments of Mumbai's local trains. "What makes you angry?" is the filmmaker's simple question to the passengers. Acquaintances and chance encounters are invited to reveal their opinions and stories in a public yet protected space. The answers and observations are diverse: sometimes funny, sometimes depressing, sometimes combative, sometimes resigned, but always honest, they come together to form an increasingly complex tapestry.

Ladies Only is a feminist portrait of modern Indian urban women. The film provides insights into their views and lifestyles, their ambitions and their freedoms in a highly industrialized, prosperity-driven world, but its political dimension goes far beyond Indian society. Along the way, we experience the metropolis of Mumbai, its wild mixture of cultures, languages and faces, and its colors, which seem to glow even in the film's stylish black-and-white images.
