Description

In their opera Rusalka, premiered in 1901, Antonín Dvořák and his librettist Jaroslav Kvapil blend the Slavic myth of the undead avenger from the water with fairy-tale characters such as Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué's Undine and Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid against the backdrop of the dark legends of the poet Karel Jaromír Erben. The fascinating soundscapes, the songlike and highly dramatic moments made Rusalka one of the most successful Czech operas.

Staging

Rusalka feels trapped in a world from which she cannot escape. She is prepared to give up her immortality for a human soul in order to win the love of the prince. She has to pay for this with her voice. Silenced and freed from her dark world, she has to watch as the prince chooses a strange woman over her - to both their doom. She cannot live, she cannot die and yet in the end she helps the prince to his death with a "saving" kiss.
