Russian Circles
Over the course of their last seven studio albums, Chicago-based instrumental trio Russian Circles have moved through a diverse topography of sounds, moods and approaches with their limited arsenal of drums, bass and guitar. It's difficult to trace an evolution of their sound, as their records always felt like carefully curated playlists. It wasn't uncommon to hear droning meditations, shimmering prog exercises, sweeping riff-fests, haunting folk ballads and tense noise rock all on the same album.

Pelican
Pelican has always been a band that wasn't just from Chicago, but was distinctly Chicago. Formed in 2000 by guitarists Trevor Shelley de Brauw and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec along with brothers Bryan and Larry Herweg on bass and drums, Pelican built on the rule-free, genre-bending scene synonymous with the Fireside Bowl. "The '90s in Chicago were a free-spirited community. Everyone just came from a place of pure creativity," says Shelley de Brauw. With the return of Schroeder-Lebec to the band after Dallas Thomas' departure in 2022, this reunited version of Pelican allowed the band to rekindle the spirit of their formative years and build something distinctly new with Flickering Resonance.
