SETAREH presents Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar's exhibition, Life or Else. It is a highly topical exploration of the vulnerability of our biosphere. Behnam-Bakhtiar uses his signature technique of peinture raclée to encourage the viewer to critically contemplate the delicate connection between human existence and its natural environment. The exhibition will open with a vernissage on Friday, June 28 at 6 pm . We welcome you with a champagne reception. The artists will be present.

Behnam-Bakhtiar's artistic process is closely linked to nature. In his studio in the south of France, Behnam-Bakhtiar meticulously prepares pigments from local earth tones. The colors on his canvases become a tangible expression of the soil itself, a clear reminder of the fragile balance on which human creativity rests. The deliberate choice of materials goes far beyond pure aesthetics and is rather a powerful statement about the intertwining of art and the environment.

In the artist's peinture raclée process, bold colors of different media are layered, each layer reflecting a particular energy or emotion. In a continuous flow of work, the artist carefully removes areas of paint to reveal the layers beneath. The scraping creates a fascinating interplay of color and texture, transforming the canvas into an archive of layers and scratches, all of which create depth and dimension. By using local pigments, Behnam-Bakhtiar challenges the viewer to move on these soils as well. Analogous to the earth on which the artist moves, his paintings embody an increasingly finely balanced environment. The vibrant hues, delicately extracted from the local soil, become a powerful symbol: a fragile beauty under attack.

Sassan Behnam-Bakhtiar is a French-Iranian artist who was born in Paris in 1984. He spent his youth and early adult years in Tehran, Iran. This period, marked by the Iran-Iraq war, greatly influenced his artistic expression, which deals with philosophical themes of life and humanity.
