The cashier of a bank steals a large sum of money - actually to help a lady who has been refused a loan. But as she turns out to be extremely wealthy, he keeps the money and plunges into the expensive pleasures of the big city.
Director Martin adapted the expressionist play of the same name, which premiered in 1917, as a sequel to THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI: expressive acting with seemingly artificial costumes in painted decorations form an artistic unity with the depiction of sophisticated city life. The film was long considered lost and, with its radical visual language, is today regarded as one of the main representatives of expressionist film in the Weimar Republic.
