Anšlavs Eglītis used his own life story as the basis for a bitterly funny episodic novel. The bombed-out Latvian refugee Pēteris Drusts is stranded from Berlin in the small town of Pfifferlingen in the Swabian Alb, a supposed transit station on his way to Switzerland. In this backwoods province, the Riga-born Pēteris Drusts gets offended by his big-city manners.
Berthold Forssman's sharply balanced translation perfectly captures the pointed humor of Anšlav's Eglītis. The ambiguous humor is marked by pain - the cruel absurdity of life can only be endured with liberating laughter.
The pianist Ievgeniia Iermachkova plays Latvian music.
