Comedy by Nick Whitby based on the film of the same name by Ernst Lubitsch
In 1939, the Polish theater group Polski Theater is about to premiere a play about Nazi Germany. After the fascists invade, the theater is closed by the censors and the group faces dark times. Until a young Polish bomber pilot asks for their help in catching a spy.
To Be or Not to Be premiered in the USA in 1942 and was criticized for trivializing Nazi terror. How disarming it can be for representatives of fascist systems of rule when they are exposed to ridicule was only recognized later - and the film went down in film history. In Sein oder Nichtsein, Nazi rule is not only mordantly caricatured, but also brilliantly exposed by the actors pretending to be Nazis.
