With Shabaka (he no longer carries his surname Hutchings) and Nduduzo Makhathini, two formative musicians of contemporary jazz meet at Enjoy Jazz to play a duo concert together. Shabaka, a multi-instrumentalist and composer from the London jazz scene, is known for his intense, powerfully rhythmic saxophone playing, which made bands such as The Comet is Coming and Sons of Kemet pioneers of the new Brit jazz and thus opened up jazz to a new, young, party-loving audience. In 2024, he announced that he would take a break from his instrumental alter ego and concentrate on playing the flute. Nduduzo Makhathini, last year's artist in residence at Enjoy Jazz, combines the healing power of the trained sangoma with scientific expertise, post-colonial educational work and a deeply humanistic attitude in his art. When these two virtuoso and subtle musicians enter into a dialog with each other, the result is sure to be exciting.
The concert will be followed by an artist talk on the festival theme of Knowing.
The discussion will be led by Maxi Broecking.
