The evening on 21.6.25 begins with the experimental short film Sex Fish (1993), followed by Fresh Kill (1994). Cheang's debut film is also the starting point for her current survey exhibition at Haus der Kunst. The "eco-cyber-noia" film is an original critique of waste, capitalism and digital surveillance.
Program on Saturday, 21.6.25, 8 pm
followed by a discussion between Julia Fuhr Mann (filmmaker), Julia Weigl (FILMFEST MÜNCHEN) and Sarah Johanna Theurer (Haus der Kunst München).
Sex Fish ( 1993, 6 min)
Sex Fish deals with queer eroticism, swimming against the current and female power. The experimental video was created in collaboration with friends under the code names E.T. (Ela Troyano), Baby (Jane Castle), and Maniac (Cheang).
Fresh Kill (1994, 80 min, English OF)
Shu Lea Cheang's feature film debut Fresh Kill is a queer eco-thriller set in a New York of the near future. It centers on a queer couple who uncover a conspiracy surrounding environmental pollution and media manipulation. After their daughter mysteriously disappears after eating radioactive sushi, the couple teams up with hackers and activists to uncover the sinister machinations of the GX Corporation. Fresh Kill combines cyberpunk, satire and political activism to create a radical critique of toxic capitalism and digital surveillance.
