Sins of my Youth
A constantly varying collective uniting the philosophy and freedoms of punk rock with influences from indie and folk, founded in 2015 by Tim Jonathan von Holst in and around the Cologne-Düsseldorf area.
Sins of My Youth create somnambulistic dramolettes full of unagitated poetry and decelerated beauty, exploring the territories around their own genre and appropriating them as if there were no borders, no walls. At times it's as if New Order were playing a Grateful Dead song; at others, as if Jeff Buckley were covering The Beatles.
Von Holst's lyrics are about personal relationships and their disintegration, but he is not afraid to bring out the good in them: "And while my dark days really have no bearing on me [...] I won't try to forget to keep the best of me" (Good Night, I'm Alive) - like this and like a red thread running as an eternal mantra through all the other songs, the Sins stand for the discovery of hope in hopelessness, of fruit in the desert, of resurrection in death.
For the other members, most of whom already play in other bands (Argies, Kids In a Toy Store, Die Toten Hosen, etc.), the Sins are an opportunity to experiment and reinvent themselves again and again. Thus, the 10-member collective played the first 50 concerts in nearly 25 different lineups, and it was sometimes left to chance whether the band was expanded to include a third guitarist, a keyboardist or a sitar drone.
