From the first riff and the first blast beats, it's clear: Six Feet Under are not for the faint-hearted. For 33 years and over 14 albums, the quintet from Tampa/Florida have been pouring all their energy into a constantly growing monolith of pure brutality, lyrical heaviness and impressive musicality. Numerous line-up changes have helped the band to keep their sound, which is deeply rooted in death metal but also consistently experiments with other metal genres, fresh and to find new impulses. It is remarkable that the majority of the part-time members came from bands they were friends with, such as Obituary, Fear Factory or Gorgoroth - or, conversely, moved on to them.
Six Feet Under was originally founded as a side project for frontman and growler Chris Barnes during his last years with death metal epigones Cannibal Corpse. In 1995, it became the frontman's sole focus, coinciding with the release of their debut album "Haunted". Over the decades, all positions in the band have changed several times. Only Barnes remains from the original line-up, but the quality has remained remarkably consistent.
In fact, the current line-up with Barnes, guitarists Jack Owen and Ray Suhy, bassist Jeff Hughell and drummer Marco Pitruzzella is considered by many to be the most powerful, vital and technically and musically adept line-up, and the five form a devastating unit, especially live. The arrival of Jack Owen in 2017 proved to be one of the most important turning points in the band's history, as Barnes and Owen had already formed an uncompromisingly good songwriting and lyricist unit in Cannibal Corpse in the 1990s. With Six Feet Under, the newly joined Owen immediately took over the production of the two most recent albums "Nightmares of the Decomposed" and "Killing for Revenge". "We worked well together in Cannibal Corpse," Barnes reports. "He was probably my favorite person in that band at the time. I loved him dearly as a friend and a musician, so I feel really comfortable letting him take the helm because I just have so much respect for him as an artist."
Jack Owen has also reportedly taken over production duties again for the 15th album, which has been announced for next April and is currently untitled. Chris Barnes recently wrote on social media about what to expect: "Pure, one hundred percent real death metal. No filler, no over-processing, no modern tricks or bells and whistles. Just pure death metal." This should certainly increase the anticipation of long-time fans for Six Feet Under's first German shows in around eight years.
