Tim Burton, the master of morbid humor, offers us a treat of the gruesome kind: The year is 1799. The New World is about to turn into the 19th century and, according to the criminalist Ichabod Crane, should follow enlightened and humane ways of law enforcement. Because of these views, he is transferred to Sleepy Hollow by a judge (former Dracula star Christopher Lee). There, the town's most respected residents are mysteriously beheaded, and the prime suspect is the Headless Horseman, a Hessian who, as a headhunter, met the same fate he inflicted on others. What role does the Van Tessel family tree play and how is the beautiful Katrina involved? A spooky tale that is more horror comedy and romance rolled into one, with an enchanting, constantly swooning Johnny Depp. (JP)
