Sonic Pluriverse Festival: Global Echoes of Gnawa
Baaba Maal & Daande Leñol
Concert, DJ set
One of Africa's leading voices since the 1980s, Baaba Maal is coming back on tour this year after a long break to celebrate his 40th anniversary on stage. Born in 1953 into a widely ramified fishing family in Podor, the northernmost town in Senegal on the banks of the Senegal River on the border with Mauritania, he first studied music in Dakar and Paris before embarking on a musical research trip through West Africa lasting several years. It was here that he laid the foundations for his later multifaceted work, helped shape the desert blues, recorded his first albums and finally founded his band Daande Leñol (The Voice of the People). He later released several solo albums and worked with Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Tony Allen, Mumford & Sons and U2, among others. With Hans Zimmer, he created the music for Black Hawk Down, and he is the voice of the Oscar and Grammy-winning soundtrack to Black Panther. He also sings in all international collaborations as a modern griot, storyteller and troubadour with his unmistakable voice in Pulaar, the Fulani language from the Senegal River Valley. For decades, he has also used his fame and international success to promote social projects and address issues such as health, education and the environment. He works with several international organizations, frequently appears at climate summits, donor conferences or educational congresses and was a United Nations ambassador for education and climate issues.
