Dounime, Duos Duet: In the space between
Concert, talk, DJ set
Sound Base Berlin focuses on the diversity of scenes and communities that shape the Berlin music landscape, often through queer, migrant and diasporic perspectives. The series combines live performances with talks and DJ sets. The second event focuses on artists who work between memory, the present and future-oriented forms of expression. The program brings together two Berlin duos that deal with musical influences from Iran in very different ways.
Concert one: Dounime
Dounime - Persian for "two halves that form a whole" - is the duo founded in Berlin by percussionist Roshanak Rafani and oud player Fatemeh Dehghani. The interplay of their instruments and voices is characterized by the rhythmic cycles and harmonic structures of traditional Persian music, by a clear and at the same time poetic dramaturgy. Their performance at Sound Base Berlin begins in the musical mode of Dastgāh-e Navā and leads back to Navā via the melancholic Āwāz-e Eṣfahān. In their dialog, Rafani and Dehghani also leave room for solo moments and individual expression within a larger whole.
Concert two: Duos Duet
Duos Duet was created in Tehran in 2017 as a project by classically trained musicians Golsana Shenasaei and Niki Yaghmaee. In addition to their work in classical and contemporary music ensembles, they created a platform for an independent artistic practice between concert, performance and interdisciplinary formats. In addition to Shenasaei's cello and Yaghmaee's violin and viola, Duos Duet also use loops and electronic sound processing. Based on Iranian traditions and the soundscapes of the surrounding regions, their pieces move between composition and improvisation. Their work repeatedly revolves around questions of home, identity and migration - and the possibility of translating their own experiences into sound.
Both projects operate in an intermediate space in which musical traditions are carried forward and stories are told across borders. They make individual and collective experiences audible, their voices and sounds become the expression of a generation that is repositioning itself.
