Speaking of Video Art

In the organizer's words:

Once a month, the Berlinische Galerie invites you to "Speaking of Video Art", a small group discussion about the current program in the IBB video room. The event series offers an open space for anyone who would like to discuss films or socio-political issues in art and get to know various artists and authors. Together we will watch selected videos and then read short excerpts from essays, theory, stories or poems in English or German that are related to the works in terms of content or form. The subsequent discussion offers space to follow the discursive tracks of the video works as well as perspectives and questions from the group.

Based on the film "rückblickend betrachtet" by Daniel Asadi Faezi and Mila Zhluktenko, in June we will read the poem "Mein Name ist Ausländer" by the poet Semra Ertan, a letter by the filmmaker Sohrab Shahid Saless about his film "Empfänger unbekannt" and an excerpt from the book "Undeutsch" by the historian Fatima El-Tayeb. Like the film, the texts address racism in the Federal Republic of Germany before and after 1990 from different perspectives. The video and the texts in dialogue raise questions about how and whether a visual language can be found to make continuities between different events of racist violence visible.

In the IBB video room has been presenting artists who work with time-based media since 2011. The program shows works that deal with media or political and social issues. Particular attention is paid to giving space to marginalized perspectives and making the effects of power structures visible.

The series of events will be moderated by Louisa Engel, research volunteer in education and outreach. The events can be attended independently of each other. No preparation is required for participation. Active participation in the discussion or relaxed listening, both are equally welcome.

Language: The event will be held in German and English. In order to facilitate an exchange of ideas, all participants should have at least a passive understanding of both languages.
