Stadt der Frauen ‒ Feministische Betrachtungen in Mittelalter und Gegenwart

In 1405, Christine de Pizan wrote her work "The Book of the City of Women" and sparked one of the first literary controversies. As one of the most remarkable European writers of the Middle Ages, Christine de Pizan thus laid the foundations for feminist self-determination and the questioning of femininity. The writer, who was able to make a living from her writing, waged the battle against men. In her work, she countered the image of women portrayed by Jean de Meun in his "Rose Novel" with a utopia: she built a fictitious city of women based on the building material of words.

At TR Warszawa in October 2023, director and author Emma Hütt will be exploring Christine de Pizan as a character and her work in her production "Miasto Kobiet", building a fictional city of women and focusing on the struggle with one's own femininity. The up-and-coming Berlin director connects with important female actors in Polish theater and builds a bridge between the two neighboring countries.

The discussion event in cooperation with TR Warszawa will focus on Christine de Pizan's work and the staged translations: What do these feminist reflections from the Middle Ages mean for the present? What is the situation of women in Poland and Germany? What does this mean for art production, where is this reflected?
