In video works and sculptures, Belgian visual artist* Stef Van Looveren challenges outdated gender and body politics and engages with the performativity of interpersonal interactions.
Van Looveren's first performance is based on the eponymous video work Radical Hope (2018) in which Van Looveren, together with 30 performers*, immerses herself in various emotional states such as desire, happiness, sadness or anger. Radical Hope - Eye to Eye is an immersive live experience in several expansive sculptural installations in the festival hall and foyer of the Sophiensæle. Mud, earth, water and plants form an erotic-opulent playground for a symphony with seven bodies and numerous objects. Danceable club sounds overlap with ASMR (abbreviation for autonomous sensory meridian reaction, a pleasant tingling sensation on the skin mostly produced by auditory stimuli) and religious iconography with elements from technology, pop culture and BDSM.
Commissioned and co-produced by: DE SINGEL
The performance is sponsored by the Goethe-Institut. With the support of the City of Antwerp and the Flemish Government.
Media partners: Arts of the Working Class, Berlin Art Link, Das Wetter, Missy Magazine, Siegessäule, taz.
