For over a decade, US songwriter Steve Gunn has been one of the pioneers of an experimental sound between folk, indie rock and avant-garde. After three acclaimed albums that he recorded for the renowned Matador label, he released his seventh studio album Daylight Daylight in the fall of 2025 - his first in four years. On it, he captures the virtuosity and intimacy of his solo playing, which was too often obscured by other layers of sound on his rock-oriented predecessors.

Gunn's career includes a number of collaborations with notable songwriting colleagues such as Ryley Walker, Marry Lattimore and Cass McCombs. After initially playing the stages of the world in Kurt Vile's live band The Violators, he began to hone his own enigmatic solo work in 2007 at the latest, in which reduced fingerpicking feels just as much at home as outbursts of jazz or psychedelic rock. Even after more than a decade of euphoric reviews and appearances at festivals such as the Newport Folk Festival , he continues to shape his influences, which range from John Fahey to Michael Hurley and Sandy Bull, into a unique, constantly evolving body of work.
