A German-Indian co-production inspired by Friedrich Schiller's "Kabale und Liebe" Opening premiere 1 | World premiere
In English, Kannada and Malayalam, with German and English surtitles
Note: There are still tickets left at the Box Office. What is it about? For this year's festival edition, the Indian author and director Lakshman KP has been invited to bring his version of Schiller's classic "Kabale und Liebe" to the stage. Together with an intercultural ensemble, he reassembles the material as a "play within a play" - we watch the actors rehearse - against the backdrop of the Indian caste system and contemporary issues of love, race, gender and morality.
"Still I Choose to Love" deals with the themes of intimacy and touch from the perspective of the Dalit - the lowest caste in Hindu society - and women in India. Despite constitutional equality, Dalits and women still face social exclusion. Inter-caste marriages and relationships are largely taboo. Lakshman KP juxtaposes this invisible politics of inequality with the universal questions of love. Why go there? To see an international and contemporary perspective on Schiller's protest against the rulers, to question our ideas of boundless love - and to experience all this poetically and provocatively staged with music, songs and humor. Insider info: Lakshman KP is an actor, director, poet and co-founder of the Jangama Collective. His plays explore the cultural memory as well as the political and social identity of the Dalit in India. "Still I Choose to Love" is his first work in Germany. Lakshman KP will be a guest at Vorgarten on 22.06.
