STRAND - Ort des Wandels

In the organizer's words:

Installation by Sabine Schelhorn and lecture by Karsten Reise

Sabine Schellhorn and Karsten Reise approach the theme of the beach from different angles. Schellhorn as a visual artist, who works site- and occasion-specific, often with theme-specific material - as here with sand - her guest Karsten Reise as a coastal researcher and author, who also shares his knowledge with interested people in lectures, among other things.

Schellhorn has been collecting sand from seashores around the world since 2021, and with the help of many people, she has collected almost 500 sands to date. She only needs a small amount at a time to create her series of haptic drawings, which will be exhibited for the first time in an installation.

Schellhorn is also developing a map on which the locations of her sand collection will be marked. Marine biologist and author Professor Karsten Reise writes and lectures about the hidden and wondrous in beach life, about moving grains of sand and what the sea washes up on the beaches.

Reise lives on the island of Sylt, where he worked at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. He can therefore report in particular on beach and coastal research there.
