In the organizer's words:

The steep rise of Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779) to become one of, if not the, most famous painters in Europe from the middle of the 18th century was matched by an equally steep fall in general esteem just a few years after his death. The colloquium examines the factors that help to understand both the relevance and the changing reception of Mengs. For a differentiated assessment, it seems important to distinguish more clearly than in the past between the spheres of influence of aesthetics, the reception of antiquity, the academy and art theory.
