In April, we invite you to experience South Indian sounds live at the Museum Fünf Kontinente. Under the direction of flutist Shantala Subramanyam from the city of Chennai, selected pieces of Carnatic music from South India will be performed, inspired by spiritual, philosophical and nature-related themes.
The flautist will be accompanied by Keshav Mohan (violin) and Anirudha Bhat (mridangam and konnakol).
Carnatic music
Carnatic music is characterized by contemplative melodies and rich ornamentation. The classical music style originating from South India is known for its precision and rhythmic complexity. Compositions often begin calmly and build up to ecstatic climaxes.
An introduction and explanations of the compositions played promote a deeper understanding of this music.
