After Bob Mould had already significantly shaped the future of rock with Hüsker Dü, he founded the band Sugar at the end of 1991 together with bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis. They made their live debut at the beginning of the following year at the legendary 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia. Sugar's debut album "Copper Blue", which was named "Album of the Year 1992" by the NME and is now considered a classic, became an instant sensation, gaining worldwide recognition and milestone status for the melodic power and profound, cathartic pop artistry of songs like "A Good Idea", "Helpless" and the alternative rock radio hit and MTV favorite "If I Can't Change Your Mind". The trio quickly played bigger and bigger stages, including a legendary performance at the Great X-pectations Festival in London's Finsbury Park, where they stole the show.
With a tailwind, Sugar released "Beaster" in 1993 and celebrated a brilliant entry at number 3 in the British album charts and number 4 in the US Billboard "Heatseekers" charts.
Although the six-song mini-LP was recorded in the same sessions as "Copper Blue", it was characterized by a much more raw energy and darker melancholy than its predecessor, which was reflected in such devastating, sacrilegious outbursts of rage as "Judas Cradle" and "JC Auto". Sugar's second studio album, "File Under: Easy Listening", was released in 1994 and once again stormed the top 10 of the British album charts. This time it even reached the upper reaches of the Billboard 200, with songs such as the country-tinged "Believe What You're Saying" and the infectious "Gee Angel", Sugar once again pushed musical boundaries and explored a wider range of styles without losing her characteristic intensity and unbridled energy.
Despite these successes, Sugar disbanded after a tour of Japan in early 1995. Numerous live recordings, reissues and anthologies over the following three decades helped to cement the band's legacy and establish Sugar as undisputed masters of loud, guitar-heavy rock for the ages.
The original members of Sugar reunited in June 2025. The first new song in over three decades, "House Of Dead Memories", was released on October 15, 2025.
