Frankie and Freddie Lehmann, two brothers from Bremen, in West Berlin, in 1980. While one has been trying to get a foothold in Kreuzberg for weeks, the other wants to move on to New York, but first had to stay at the “Probandenhotel” on the Ku’damm and serve as a guinea pig for antidepressants. Now, one day before Christmas Eve, he’s afraid of people, can no longer ride the subway, and loses an important bag. In his new novel, *Frankie and Freddie*, Sven Regener sends the two on an odyssey through a city caught between two worlds—a place of fun and coldness, defiance and anarchy, resignation and the will to survive.
