Tag des offenen Denkmals am Schauplatz Eisenbahn

To celebrate Open Monument Day, the Schauplatz Eisenbahn in Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf invites you at 9:00 a.m. to a special journey through the history of the railroad. Under the theme “Supply – Connection – Transportation,” this free special guided tour highlights the diverse roles that the switching yard and the railway depot once fulfilled—as well as the people, facilities, and technical equipment that kept everything running.

The special tour connects well-known and lesser-known areas of the site. It’s not just about historic vehicles and impressive technology, but also about the stories behind the facilities: How did people work at the marshalling yard? How was a steam locomotive prepared for service? What role did the railway depot play in the larger railway network? And how did rail transport change life and work in Chemnitz?

“Supply – Connection – Transportation” invites you to discover the Railway Site from a unique perspective—as a place where technology, people, and transportation routes interacted for decades and where a piece of Chemnitz’s industrial and transportation history is preserved to this day.

Starting at 10:00 a.m., the regular museum tour of the Railway Exhibition Site will begin (admission required).
